Mohammed Abu Imam (10th) Expired 23 Sep 2004
" .. I have seen this wonderful site of Bangladesh marine officers just a few days back. I had no idea about it before. Let me introduce myself first. I am Hasib Imam, son of Late Mohammed Abu Imam and Mrs. Hasina Imam. My father was an ex-marine engineer from 10th batch of the marine academy. He passed away on 23rd Sept' 04 (Innalillahi wa-inna-ilaihi rajeun) due to heart failure. It's been two years now and finally I have found something where others can notice who actually my father was. Since he belonged to one of you, I really like to take the honor to post his profile to your site.
My father was born on 10th Feb' 52. He was the 2nd son of my grand father M. Nur Mia. He went to Dhaka Residential Model School and proved his merit ever since. He was a successful student both academic and in sports, debate and other extra-curricular activities. He passed both S.S.C (same school) and H.S.C (Dhaka College) with distinction. Then he joined Bangladesh Marine Academy in Chittagong. He got married to my mother Mrs. Hasina Imam in 1975. After leaving marine service, he finally devoted to garment business. He had been the Executive Director of United Apparels Garments Ltd. and the Chairman of Hivertech Ltd. till his death. On the very day of 23rd September, I actually talked with my parents on the phone around 9-30 am and later I knew he had the attack at 10 am just after taking his regular bath. It was just a couple of minutes and I lost my dearest father. My mother is taking care of our business now in Dhaka. I am actually their only son. I was born in 6th Aug' 82. I am currently doing my co-op job with Research in Motion (RIM) as a co-op student of Electrical Engineering (3rd Year) from University of Windsor in Canada.
May all of you pray for my father and may Allah rest his soul in peace. .............."

He is back in New Orleans with his family three weeks ago. His home is damaged heavily but habitable after some repair. It will take lots of more repairs to bring it back. His son, who was supposed to start in Tulane University, New Orleans this semster got himsels admitted to prestigious Emroy University, Atlanta. Capt. Shankar also started his works. He was very priseful all the mariners called him from all over the worlds. He was very happy about the moral support. He hopes the city, he loves so much, New Orelans will be back soon to its glory and fame soon.

On 01 Sep 2005 Capt. Shankar sent and e-mail to all: " ...........Dear All: I am safe with my family. We evacuated New Orleans on Saturday evening and headed towards Houston, Texas. The Category 5 hurricane Katrina passed New Orleans on Monday AM but the eye seemed to have missed it.But things were not to be so easy for New Orleans. The system of levees (embankments) that protect this 'soup bowl' city below sea level from Lake Pontchartrain to the north and Mississippi river to the south, did not hold up and were breached in 3 or 4 places. Water from the Lake Pontchartrain to the north and the Industrial Canal (which connects the Mississippi with the Lake Pontchartrain) flowed thru the gaps inundating the entire city. Water has been reported to be upto 20 ft in places. New Orleans is now out of bounds and practically a huge cesspool of stagnant water. It is doubtful people will be allowed in for the next 4/6 weeks. The beautiful city as we know it is probably history at this point of time. The levees would now have to be plugged and then measures taken to pump the water out. This seems to be a gargantuan task with no electricity knocking most pumps out of service. The US Army Corps of Engineers are now involved.
I may have lost everything but am not sure, as reports coming in about my neighborhood are sketchy. Everybody I know have evacuated and available sources point out at flooding and wind damage in my neighborhood. To make matters worse a huge gas station opposite my street is on a fire. My wife, son and myself are all safe and sound and have each other, which is most important. Our friends in Houston have been most supportive. We need your prayers at this time.
Shankar 01 Sep 2005
